Our project of the month for May is “PyrAnakampsi - Strengthening civic action in fire-affected communities” funded under the Active Citizens Fund programme in Cyprus and implemented by Laona Foundation in partnership with Kıbrıs Çevre Girişimi (Cyprus Environmental Initiative).
The project’s overall aim is to support civil society in rural areas, as well as the lands devastated by wildfires in upland Larnaca and Limassol, and also in northern Cyprus, by empowering civil society representatives and informal groups in developing a holistic approach to their post-fire situation. Read more about the project here.
Since the launch of the project in July 2022, the PyrAnakampsi team has been implementing meetings with the local communities in the fire – affected villages across Cyprus to discuss post-fire situation and threats and to invite the locals to participate in co-planning the future. The project has also been involving local communities in tree-building and dry-stone walling workshops and trainings, empowering them to contribute to the recovery of their land.
